Glasvegas/The Bodega Social/31.01.2008

Waiting 20 extremely squashed minutes in the sold-out Bodega Social shows that there really is a definite buzz around the currently unsigned Glasvegas and judging by their lateness the band certainly know it. This egotistical behavior, which is usually more in place at a homecoming show or a massive headline show rather than a band’s first tour, is completely justified as the band take the stage looking classically cool dressed head to toe in black and instantly wash the audience in an ocean of sound.

When singer James Allan finally lets his thick Scottish accent laced vocals loose on the audience everything falls perfectly into place. Of course they’re not the first band to embrace the Scottish accent into their sound but the beautiful depth and pain in Glasvegas’ lyrics wouldn’t have the emotive impact they do without Allan’s raw, unembarrassed vocals forcefully delivering them. Their performance is unashamedly indulgent which only makes the collection of dark figures atop the Bodega’s tiny stage all the more intriguing and their near-flawless fledgling tunes really fucking exciting.

Despite delivery a truly outstanding set Glasvegas wait untill the end to deliver the song which, in a perfect would, should take them to the dizzying heights of stardom, a place few credible bands can call home. The song is ‘Daddy’s Gone’ and it has powerful anthemic quality such that even though tonight they’re confined to one of Nottingham’s smallest venues you can already see Glasvegas playing a legendary headline slot at T in the Park quite clearly on the horizon. The passionate performance of the band’s final song tightens their grip on the audience and  as the band walk off stage to a grand wave of applause it’s clear that tonight there have been many new converts to what is currently the Glavegas cause but will soon be a momentous bandwagon.
