Maps, M83/London Koko/7.07.09
I was a late comer to the M83, beyond even the realms of fashionably late. In fact, I was only beginning to discover the brilliance of songs like ‘Moonchild’, due to it’s chance appearance on a mix cd gift, when the general music geek population of the internet was questioning the brilliance of their most recent offering ‘Saturdays=Youth’. A record inspired by the soundtracks of 80s teen dramas which featured highly in many top album lists at 2008s tail end. It is due to that fact and 6 months of wrong time, wrong place with regards to his scattered UK touring this year that tonight is my first witnessing of the M83 live experience. For a lesser known reason, it is also my first time in Koko as a venue and it might as well be my last as there are very few acts that go with its classic theatre meets disco chic decor as well as tonight’s. The Big Pink- A Brief History of Love
They’ve been picked for the BBC Sound of 2009 (kind of like winning a lottery ticket to success), have been written about everywhere, wowed a number of festival audiences this summer and now The Big Pink’s debut album is finally with us.
The start of A Brief History of Love, the opening three tracks in particular, is as strong as any you’ll find this year and, with the heady blur between shoegaze and pop, it is exactly what could be hoped for from the album. ‘Too Young To Love’ is a stomping, feedback drenched affair which sums up what is often so bloody fantastic about The Big Pink- it is simultaneously anthemic and highly intimate. Similarly, ‘Dominoes’ is a fully formed, euphoric wave upon the senses. Although it is clearly the most sugar coated, accessible moment on the album and sounds like Kasabian covering Good Charlotte with 90s boy band backing vocals- possibly the lamest ingredients to a song ever- it somehow works perfectly.

Simian Mobile Disco- Temporary Pleasure
After releasing their debut album Attack Decay Sustain Release in 2007, Simian Mobile Disco have gone on to become the unlikeliest pair of geeky superstar DJs in the world. While that album might not have quite been ingrained into the minds and dance floors of a generation in the same way as, say, the debut from Justice, it definitely occupied a firm and happy place in many a hardcore clubber and music fan alike.
