No Age- ‘Losing Feeling’ EP

After just over a year since their last release, the two piece LA mongers of noisy rock and experimental shoe-gaze named No Age are back with a neat four track EP.

The title track begins with a gentle, reverby guitar tickling its way into view before the rolling, stumbling drums burst onto the scene. The song trickles along like this for a while- swaying back and forth between sombre, hazy vocals and the uplifting guitar flourishes- before finally rocketing forward into a dizzying pinnacle of fast and fuzzy guitar.

The beauty of No Age is the way they try and disguise their often poppy melodies with wails of feedback, layers of wobbling reverb and what must be  purposefully bad recording. It’s kind of cute, I suppose. Like a hardened gangster who covers his heart of gold with swearing and tattoos.

The highlight of the EP is saved until last, with ‘You’re a Target’ rounding everything off in appropriately noisy fashion. The song races along part thrashy punk, part My Bloody Valentine style soaring and wailing.

If scrappy, rough-as-a-bear’s-arse style punk mixed with floaty, obscure shoe-gaze is what gets you up in the morning, this EP is for you. Because No Age excel at getting that combination perfectly balanced.
