It’s not for the cock, it’s for joining the dots

Dot to Dot Festival, Nottingham 24/25 May

It’s that thing again in Nottingham when all the dirty indie/alternative clubs and venues are filled with bands and fans and everyone gets trashed whilst stumbling around trying to get in to see the next big thing. Only, it doesn’t seem quite as mental this year…perhaps because instead of just being on bank holiday Sunday, Dot to Dot has now been stretched over the whole weekend. At least it’s not raining. Yet.

It’s not for the cock, it’s for the scientists

We Are THE PHYSICS @ The Bodega Social, 19/5/2008

Kicking off the frolicking tonight is local Nottingham outfit, Swound. The band, to their own admission, don’t fit into any particular scene of modern music, yet their odd blend of American college rock and erratic party anthems goes down pretty well. For a few songs they almost sound like Weezer being pushed away from pop sheen by System of a Down but unfortunately it all becomes a bit too repetitive. The band are tight and put on a good live show, yet they seem a bit too keen on massaging their egos and flexing their over eager musical muscles. They clearly have plenty of fans/mates though, and provide a good warm up (as well as quite probably the majority of the audience) for the main act.

Its not for the cock, its for being way overdue.

Menomena, Nottingham Rescue Rooms, 28/02/2008

Menomena are a mix. All three members are impressive multi-instrumentalists who so far have created three albums exploring many different styles and influences from the Blur like ‘Rotten Hell’ to the rolling funk bass and saxaphone in ‘Gay A’ which are all wrapped up in grammy nominated artwork. Late of the Pier/ Slagsmalsklubben/ Video Nasties @ The Plug – Sheffield 26/02/08

The blog have been singing the praises of Late of the Pier for sometime now. However, it is only recently that they are starting to get a lot of attention from the rest of Britain. Tonight they take to the stage in Sheffield. More >

Los Campesinos!/Johnny Foreigner/Ultcult @ Leadmill 19/02/2008

Praised by Gareth Campesinos as his favourite band at the moment, four piece Ultcult have ended up playing their fourth ever gig as the opening support on the main stage for Los Campesinos. More >

These New Puritans, The Bodega Social, 15.02.2008

On paper These New Puritans have everything going for them. They’re the darlings of the broadsheet music press, loved by scenesters and their recently released debut album was met with a pretty much universal thumbs up. It’s the mix of mysterious, intelligent lyrics, catchy, lo-fi hooks and intriguing style which gives this band the big, juicy demographic label bosses salivate over.

Justice/Nottingham Rock City/13.02.08

It’s not often a member of INFTC will drag their indie bottom out of wee venues and into crowds as big as Rock City holds. In fact, the last time any of us were there was the same time as the french duo in question were supporting CSS. In just over two months they’ve gone from supporting to headlining which may have something to do with the fact that they completely owned CSS all over the country last christmas. More >

Young and Lost Club Tour

Naked and The Boys, Noah & The Whale/The Bodega Social/04.02.08

Young and Lost Club is  a new-ish label which provides a home to some rather ‘indie by numbers’ sort of bands such as Good Shoes and Pull Tiger Tail. This is not really a dig at these bands, they have some fun, catchy tunes but have not really created anything to write home (or on your music blog) about. So, when The Young and Lost Club shoved some of their newer bands in a van and spat them out in Nottingham the wonderful night that ensued was not predicted.

Glasvegas/The Bodega Social/31.01.2008

Waiting 20 extremely squashed minutes in the sold-out Bodega Social shows that there really is a definite buzz around the currently unsigned Glasvegas and judging by their lateness the band certainly know it. This egotistical behavior, which is usually more in place at a homecoming show or a massive headline show rather than a band’s first tour, is completely justified as the band take the stage looking classically cool dressed head to toe in black and instantly wash the audience in an ocean of sound. British Sea Power, Make Model at Rescue Rooms, 22/01/08

Any indie music enthusiast worth their salt will have had British Sea Power come onto their music radar since they formed in 2000. They are the kind of act you’ll either show a certain amount of indifference towards or for whom you’ll thrown all you rationality, cynicism and even expertise to the harrowing and powerful winds of the mainstream and become a dedicated and avid fan.
