Simian Mobile Disco- Temporary Pleasure
Â
Â
After releasing their debut album Attack Decay Sustain Release in 2007, Simian Mobile Disco have gone on to become the unlikeliest pair of geeky superstar DJs in the world. While that album might not have quite been ingrained into the minds and dance floors of a generation in the same way as, say, the debut from Justice, it definitely occupied a firm and happy place in many a hardcore clubber and music fan alike.

White Denim Fits (Full Time Hobby)
Where am I and what  in God’s name is happening? These are the thoughts that swim wildly around your mind by the time Fits has reached its third song, ‘Say What You Want’. The song starts with a riff that’s dirtier than sewer rat on crack before a stomping drum beat catches up and pulsates the song forwards in some sort of crazed voodoo groove. That’s all well and good. But when the song breaks down into a sweet, bluesy arpeggio before giving way to a fidgety sitar pinnacle with the drums sounding like they’re collapsing around you, you start to wonder how the fuck is this so enjoyable?
It’s not for the cock, it’s for something Big and Pink.

The Big Pink-Velvet (4AD)
One of the latest signings to wonder label 4AD, Velvet, is The Big Pink’s first release for the people that last year brought us the likes of Deerhunter and TV on the Radio. More >

Bob Dylan- “Blonde on Blondeâ€
After causing something of a stir by what is now infamously know as his “going electricâ€, Dylan released two albums (“Bringing it All Back Home†and “Highway 61 Revisitedâ€) in 1965, but it is this album of 1966- with its increasingly surreal lyrics and often woozy mixture of blues, rock and melody- that is considered by many to be one of his finest pieces of work.
It’s not for the cock, it’s for 2008.

Gavin: A lot happened in 2008. It seems so long ago now. Like any blog worth it’s salt and peppa though, we have decided to put together our best/worst gigs and albums of the year and used our clever little thinking boxes in our heads to have a guess (/dictate?) who will be floating boats in the next twelve months or so. Have a read and put us in our place about your favourite albums and who you think will storm 09…

Franz Ferdinand- “Tonight: Franz Ferdinand”
It’s been a long time coming, this here third Franz Ferdinand album. They may have stormed British popular culture with two highly successful albums in two years but after four years in relative oblivion, does anyone still care about four guys who were already the “wrong†side of 30?
Yes, of course they do. Silly question.

Radiohead- “Amnesiac”
Recorded mostly during the same sessions for “Kid A”, Radiohead described these two albums, released in 2000 and 2001, as “twins separated at birth”. Considering that “Kid A” is on fairly good terms with bleakness, it shouldn’t be taken lightly that “Amnesiac” is the creepy, fucked up sibling of the two.

Who's Next - The Who
Does anyone remember their youth? When a good friday night was cheap booze at a dirty party. When you’d hook up with that girl every week. When emotions were as powerful and as short lived as a tsunami. As the youngest member of this super-charged team of bloggers, I remember this well. In fact, now I think about it, all that stuff was still going on last week.
“We don’t care about your reminiscing though. Get onto the long-awaited new installment of Retro Sunday,” I hear you say (quite rudely, if you ask me). Well, let me introduce Who’s Next, the musical incarnation of teenhood, a shimmering rose-tinted mirror held up to the very institution of youthfulness. To summarise, a pretty sound album.
It’s not for the cock, it’s for the (lack of) Intimacy.

Bloc Party-Intimacy
2005 was the year that saw many of today’s stadium dwelling indie bands start their rise to the epic fame and fortune they enjoy today. Among the more obvious future heavy hitters such as Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers and Arctics Monkeys were four geekily dressed and impressively skilled musicians fronted a talented performer and lyricist.
