Wild Beasts- Koko, Camden- 4/03/2010
Girls. Boys. Drinking. Love. Fighting. Crying over that lost love again. Shocking me like an electric eel. Turning me on with your electric feel. I’m not saying the current crop of bands aren’t up to much, but these are maybe some of the common themes which they like to sing about that ties them loosely together. It would be hard to put Wild Beasts, the best-and probably only- thing of note to come out of the Lake District, in that category though. With the charm of an eccentric intellectual uncle who checked his sanity out years ago, Wild Beasts casually sing of such things as extra-sensory perception, flaccid cocks and Freudian slips.

The Maccabees/Matter London/20.02.09
Two buses, half the circumference of the 02 Arena, one metal detector and a search that stops just short of your various cavities and you’re ready to see The Maccabees first UK date in nine months. And that’s if you happen live near the venue. More >

Simian Mobile Disco- Koko, London 12/2/09
As the flock headed for tonight’s gig make their way in from the snowy Camden streets, an army of creepy, hybrid space travellers is waiting to meet them. Chrome Hoof are the too-numerous-to-count band dressed in silver
capes and gimp suits experimenting with dance music, metal and prog to a shocked and thrilled audience.

Sky Larkin/Pulled Apart by Horses @ ICA, London- 29/01/2008
Unlike most of his media peers, Huw Stephens is a lovely ginger welsh bloke who you’d love to spend hours with creating a fictional music festival or, failing that, just share a pint with. On top of that he’s a DJ with no other agenda than championing his favourite bands with genuine talent, regardless of media hype or “market potential”. This tour (it has his name on it, this isn’t just a strange ode Huw) brings two such bands to London town.

Gavin: A lot happened in 2008. It seems so long ago now. Like any blog worth it’s salt and peppa though, we have decided to put together our best/worst gigs and albums of the year and used our clever little thinking boxes in our heads to have a guess (/dictate?) who will be floating boats in the next twelve months or so. Have a read and put us in our place about your favourite albums and who you think will storm 09…

Ten Kens/ Educated Animals @ London Metro
After releasing what is one of the finest, yet largely overlooked and underrated, albums of the year with their self titled debut effort, Ten Kens have managed to squeeze in a couple of UK dates away from their homeland of Canada. Perhaps it’s a sign that the band are playing this scutty venue in the underbelly of the London music scene that saw very early shows from the likes of Bloc Party, The Libertines and Kings of Leon, or maybe it’s this kind of half empty, piss stained, so-quiet-between-songs-you-feel-scared-to-breath hell hole that Ten Kens are destined for. Hopefully not. Time shall tell. Read on.

Underground Railroad, Deerhoof/ULU/03/12/08
Before we can be hit with some wonderfully bizarre mix of Japanese and American pop tonight ATP are presenting the ULU’s sold out crowd with Underground Railroad who are a three piece currently residing in London via Paris which suggests the effortless cool the three piece positively ooze on stage tonight. It’s not for the cock, it’s for a slice of Swedish pop
Dec 7th
Lykke Li @ Koko, London, Friday 28th November
Swedish pop minx, Lykke Li, is in Camden town and is poised to play what must be one of her biggest gigs yet and, judging by the hoards of young females in imitating attire, it is the perfect setting for a triumphant gig.
As the designated stage time fades into the distance without us even catching a glimpse of Li, the crowd grows expectant and a little impatient. The mutterings around Koko are now dotted dangerously with words such as “divaâ€, “late†and “againâ€.

Sigur Ros @ Alexandra Palace
As the masses of people swarm through the entrance of the huge Ally Pally, the thing that stands out the most is the full on atmosphere of child-like excitement. As faces of all ages chat happily to their mates and the time draws closer to the main event of the night, it all feels like the sort of buzz of a fairground from another age.

Dananananaykroyd, Tubelord and Favours For Sailors/The Lexington/12.11.08
Gigs where even the local support band are something to get excited about are few and far between but on this non-descript Wednesday night The Lexington is hosting one and London based four piece Favours For Sailors are most certainly that band. More >
