It’s not for the cock, it’s for spotted dick magic number three
Sep 20th
After a break that may or may not have been more than just a week, Spotted Dick is back once again. The simple and pretty widely used idea is that we’ve built a playlist on spotify of new songs, slightly not so new songs, new discoveries and just plain old bangers for you to enjoy at will. Maybe this here Spotted Dick could also be used to “launch” the new .co.uk side of ths site. Personally, the upgrade to becoming www.itsnotforthecock.co.uk feels like I’ve finally tossed away the Velcro trainers and am swanning around flaunting my new shoelaced bad boys. Feels pretty good, let me tell you. Spotify, you great entity- what have you got for us today?

The Big Pink- A Brief History of Love
Â
Â
They’ve been picked for the  BBC Sound of 2009 (kind of like winning a lottery ticket to success), have been written about everywhere, wowed a number of festival audiences this summer and now The Big Pink’s debut album is finally with us.
The start of A Brief History of Love, the opening three tracks in particular, is as strong as any you’ll find this year and, with the heady blur between shoegaze and pop, it is exactly what could be hoped for from the album. ‘Too Young To Love’ is a stomping, feedback drenched affair which sums up what is often so bloody fantastic about The Big Pink- it is simultaneously anthemic and highly intimate. Similarly, ‘Dominoes’ is a fully formed, euphoric wave upon the senses. Although it is clearly the most sugar coated, accessible moment on the album and sounds like Kasabian covering Good Charlotte with 90s boy band backing vocals- possibly the lamest ingredients to a song ever- it somehow works perfectly. Â

After a Thursday night spent tragically missing East 17, wondering from field to field in the rain, catching great sets my Kap Bambino and Metronomy and having the news of the King of Pop’s ™ death gradually filtering through from “blatant festival rumour†status to a full on “Oh Shit!†reaction (through the haze, I somehow remember sitting at the Stone Circle at about 5am adamant that it is actually a fake death by MJ to escape the crippling debt, child molestation accusations and massive workload of the O2 residency…seriously, mull it over! Well, it sounded ok at the time….)….ANYWAY, after all that and much more besides, it’s time for the festival proper to kick off with the full music schedule.
It’s not for the cock, it’s for something Big and Pink.
